Step 3
The 24-month journey begins for the approved employees and dependents using both neuroplasticity tools and weight loss medications.
First-12 months:
Step 4
In the first year, you will be prescribed weight loss medications and receive immediate and ongoing support from a clinical and coaching team to help change and adapt your behavior and habits. This phase focuses on starting your weight management journey towards a healthier lifestyle.
Second-12 months:
Step 5
The second year continues to emphasize neuroplasticity, helping to reinforce sustainable behavioral changes without relying on medications. The goal is to create and maintain improvements in daily habits that become automatic.
Neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to form new neural connections, is vital for lasting weight loss. Here's why:
It helps retrain your brain to prefer healthy habits over unhealthy ones.
A flexible brain adapts better to challenges, making it easier to stay on track.
Neuroplasticity supports mental shifts, boosting the effectiveness of weight loss medications.
What are GLP-1s and how do they work?
GLP-1 medications, also known as glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists, are a class of medications initially developed for managing blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes. However, they have also shown effectiveness in promoting weight loss. GLP-1 is a hormone that naturally occurs in the body, playing a role in regulating insulin, controlling blood sugar, and influencing appetite.
When used for weight loss, GLP-1 medications work by mimicking the effects of the natural GLP-1 hormone. They stimulate insulin release, reduce the liver's glucose output, and slow down stomach emptying. These actions not only contribute to better blood sugar control but also lead to decreased appetite and a sense of fullness, aiding in weight loss efforts.
The use of GLP-1 medications for weight loss will be prescribed under the guidance of a healthcare professional and is part of a comprehensive approach that includes lifestyle modifications.
What are some common side effects of GLP-1s?
The use of GLP-1 medications may be associated with certain side effects, although individual responses can vary. Common side effects of GLP-1 medications are typically mild to moderate in intensity and can include nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea. Mild injection site reactions, such as redness or irritation, can also occur. Side effects tend to occur more frequently when the medication is first started and when the dose is increased. It's important to note that these side effects are usually transient and tend to diminish as your body adjusts to the medication. In rare cases, there may be more serious side effects. It is important to report any concerns promptly and attend regular follow-up appointments to ensure the safe and effective use of GLP-1 medications.
How are the GLP-1s prescribed and titrated during the journey?
The prescription and titration of GLP-1 medications are individualized processes guided by your healthcare provider. Typically, the initiation and adjustment of GLP-1 medications involve several key considerations. Initially, your healthcare provider will assess your overall health, medical history, and specific needs.
The prescription of GLP-1 medications typically begins with a lower dose, gradually increasing based on your response and tolerance. This titration process allows your healthcare provider to find the most effective dosage, while supporting your weight loss goals.
Regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled every 4 weeks to monitor your response to the medication and make any necessary adjustments. Your healthcare provider may consider factors such as potential side effects, biometric data, and overall well-being during these assessments.
It's crucial to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about any concerns or changes in your health. They will work with you to tailor the prescription and titration of GLP-1 medications to best meet your individual needs and help you achieve optimal health outcomes.
What is the difference between brand and compounded GLP-1 drugs?
Branded and compounded GLP-1 medications exhibit notable differences in their origins, formulations, and regulatory status. Branded GLP-1 medications are pharmaceutical products created, tested, and manufactured by established pharmaceutical companies. These medications undergo rigorous scrutiny for safety, efficacy, and quality before obtaining regulatory approval from health authorities. Branded GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound, are commercially available and adhere to standardized dosages, ensuring consistency in quality and manufacturing processes.
On the other hand, compounding medications are customized formulations prepared by pharmacists on an individualized basis. Compounding may also involve preparing a version of a FDA-approved medication that is currently in shortage. Compounded GLP-1 medications use a semaglutide salt or base. Unlike branded medications compounded drugs do not undergo the same extensive regulatory approval process. They are typically prepared in pharmacies, and their formulations can vary between pharmacy establishments.
Compounded medications may lack the same level of scrutiny regarding safety and efficacy as their branded counterparts. Patients considering compounded GLP-1 medications should discuss the advantages and disadvantages with their healthcare provider and pharmacist to make informed decisions about their treatment.
What is an alternative AOM and what are some common examples?
AOM stands for Anti-Obesity Medication. AOMs include GLP-1 medications. However, there are other AOMs on the market such as Contrave and Qsymia.
Why would an alternative AOM be prescribed over a GLP-1?
Alternative AOMs (that are not GLP-1 agonist medications) may be prescribed to treat obesity. For some individuals, these AOMs might work better and may be safer for people with certain medical conditions.
